Exílio

“At the very moment that humans discovered the scale of the universe and found that their most unconstrained fancies were in fact dwarfed by the true dimensions of even the Milky Way Galaxy, they took steps that ensured that their descendants would be unable to see the stars at all. For a million years humans had grown up with a personal daily knowledge of the vault of heaven. In the last few thousand years they began building and emigrating to the cities. In the last few decades, a major fraction of the human population had abandoned a rustic way of life. As technology developed and the cities were polluted, the nights became starless. New generations grew to maturity wholly ignorant of the sky that had transfixed their ancestors and had stimulated the modern age of science and technology. Without even noticing, just as astronomy entered a golden age most people cut themselves off from the sky, a cosmic isolationism that only ended with the dawn of space exploration.”

The Attack of the Clones

by Wagner Artur, 2002.

Nowadays we’re having a strange mania. Suble, the shadow of clones have jumped out from sci-fi movies to our very reality, confusing the world and putting into question the meaning of many things as life. Indeed, scientific advances in cloning impress every one of us every day, but is all of it really necessary? What is the significance for all this breath-taking urge for copying life, and maybe trying to steal God’s job of designer of the living things? Cloning is an ancient matter. Maybe since the birth of the first twins, humanity has been thinking about how it would be if you had a perfect copy of yourself. Last century, we discovered that the human beings parts that define them as particular creatures, like the fingerprints, or even more perfect, the iris of the eyes. But what if those parts didn’t exist? What if it could be possible to have two persons that, more than looking alike, are perfetly equal?   The possibilities are diverse. There are more uses for cloning than common sense can imagine. Out of basic uses, like duplicating organs, or creating engineered crop, the only boundary for that is the actual science and human brains, which across time have proven to be an unbeliavable source of, as much as good thoughts, bad ideas. Can you imagine people fighting each other for the right of cloning the dead family’s dog? Or maybe one rich lonely man suddenly wants to have a clone of a dead actress for his sexual slave. Other person believes that cloning herself continually will extend her lifetime forever. Or can you imagine the arise of the M.C.A., the Mistreated Clones Association, for all the rebel clones that want a better life, far away from those crazy fellows who have just decided to create them for their private mean intents, like those previously mentioned or others which a regular human’s mund can’t conceive. But there is always a crazy one who can. So, the advent of the new cloning technology may bring along an unwanted wave of legal battles, overpopulation and lack of food (yeah, clones do eat and occupy space like all matter), disfunctional families (what about having a child with yourself? Does that sound good? Just a little cloning here, fertilization in vitro there, and voilá, you got yourself a house of freaks). If society desires to conquer a new level of technology and science, it has to be aware of the consequences, and remember how good life is, in the simple way that was originally meant to be, without worrying about if today or tomorrow, your home will be target of an attack of unhappy clones.

The probability that there’s a bomb on your flight is really small, and yet still non negligible for anxious people like me. But the probability that there are two bombs is really ridiculously tiny! That’s why I always take one with me in my carry-on“.
